چکیده

In the beef production system, 70-75% of the total dietary energy is used for maintenance (Ferrell and Jenkins 1984; NRC 1996; Montaldo-Bermudez et al. 1990). Thus, while only 5% of the total life cycle dietary energy consumption is used for protein deposition in beef cattle, swine and poultry are more efficient at 14 and 22%, respectively. The relatively large size, slow maturity and slow reproductive rates of cattle ( Pitchford et al. 2002), are some of the major reasons for the inefficiency of beef production. However, maintenance energy requirements of cattle are moderately to highly heritable (h = 0.22-0.71), suggesting an opportunity to select for more efficient cattle (Carstens et al. 1989; Bishop 1992). Thus, improvements in the efficiency of use of maintenance energy either through selection, nutritional considerations and/or through management strategies should result in an increase in total beef production for a given amount of feed.

Genetics of Residual Feed Intake in Cattle and Pigs: A Review

The feed resource for animals is a major cost determinant for profitability in livestock production enterprises, and thus any effort at improving the efficiency of feed use will help to reduce feed cost. Feed conversion ratio, expressed as feed inputs per unit output, is a traditional measure of efficiency that has significant phenotypic and genetic correlations with feed intake and growth trai...

Genetics of efficient feed utilization and national cattle evaluation: a review.

Selection for the wide range of traits for which most beef breed associations calculate expected progeny differences focus on increasing the outputs of the production system, thereby increasing the genetic potential of cattle for reproductive rates, weights, growth rates, and end-product yield. Feed costs, however, represent a large proportion of the variable cost of beef production and genetic...

Duration of performance tests for growth rate, feed intake and feed efficiency in four biological types of beef cattle

Data from the centralised performance tests for young beef bulls in South Africa were used to determine the minimum test duration required to obtain an accurate measure of feed intake, growth rate and two measures of feed efficiency: feed conversion ratio and residual feed intake. Five breeds from four different biological types were used to investigate whether different duration tests are requ...

Improving residual feed intake of mule progeny of Muscovy ducks: genetic parameters and responses to selection with emphasis on carcass composition and fatty liver quality.

In France, about 95% of the fatty liver production comes from mule ducks, an infertile hybrid cross between female common ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and Muscovy drakes (Cairina moschata). As a hybrid, genetic improvement of the performance of mule ducks is achieved by selection of the parental populations. Feed represents two-thirds of the total costs of duck production; thus, the breeders' mai...

Residual Feed Intake: Animal Performance, Carcass Quality and Body Composition

Feed efficiency has a major influence on the unit cost of beef cattle production. Gibb and McAllister (1999) have reported that a 5% improvement in feed efficiency has an economic impact four times greater than a 5% improvement in average daily gain. In addition, the cost of feed is second only to fixed costs in importance to the profitability of commercial beef operations (Basarab, 1999). The ...

Test duration for growth, feed intake, and feed efficiency in beef cattle using the GrowSafe System.

This study was conducted to determine the optimum test duration and the effect of missing data on accuracy of measuring feed efficiency and its 4 related traits ADG, DMI, feed conversion ratio, and residual feed intake in beef cattle using data from 456 steers with 5,397 weekly averaged feed intakes and BW repeated measurements taken over 91 d. Data were collected using the GrowSafe System at t...
